Simone Perry – Mom Madness, http://harlemtalkradio.com

Mom Madness on Harlem Talk Radio continued its series on Education Awareness with an insightful discussion with Guy Lamolinara, Director of Communications for The Center for the Book. The Center for the Book is a division of The Library of Congress. Established in 1800, The Library of Congress is the oldest federal cultural institution in the United States. It is the largest library in the world.

The Center for the Book (Read.gov) was started in 1984. The Center for the Book brings much needed attention to literacy and the importance of reading. The Center for the Book currently has affiliate centers called State Center for The book in all 50 States including a recently established Center in The Virgin Islands.

Guy Lamolinara shared information with us regarding the upcoming programs The Center for The Book offers including The National Book Festival, which will celebrate its 10th Anniversary in September.

Simone Perry – Now, please tell us the activities that take place at the Center for the book, such as the national book festival?

Guy Lamolinara – The National Book Festival started in the year 2000. Which was the bicentennial of the Library Of Congress which as you said was founded in 1800. What we do is bring authors form all over the country and these are authors who are in all sorts of genres of writings. They come to the national mall each September, and for thirty (30) minutes they talk about their books and why they like to write. These writers get a chance to communicate with their public. This has grown every year since 2000. Last year we had more than 130,000 people come to the festival and its not just people from the Washington area, but from all over the county.

Harlem Talk Radio has recently partnered with The Center for The Book to promote literacy within the Harlem Community. We are so pleased to share in this partnership and look forward to hosting local book readings in Harlem. To hear the show in its entirety, log on to www.harlemtalkradio.com.

Robin Adelson, Executive Director of the Children’s Book Council, joined the discussion in the second half of the show. The Children’s Book Council is The National Non Profit Association for Children’s Trade Book Publishers.
The Children’s Book Council works in conjunction with The Children’s Book Council Association (Every Child A Reader) to promote the joy of reading among our nation’s youth.

Each year The Children’s Book Council sponsors Children’s Book Week. A major part of The Children’s Book Week is the Children’s Book Choice Award. This year’s awards will be marked by a Gala Event in NYC. Robin Adelson spoke in depth about the Children’s Book Choice Awards voting process:

Simone Perry – How do you gather kids who vote?

Robin Adelson
– To determine the finalist, the finalist for the book of the year award from kindergarden to six grade are associated with our children choices program we run together with the International Reading Association. It involves more than 12,000 kids across that participates in an establish program. It has been going on for over thirty years.
