Harlem Talk Radio had the rare opportunity to have a meaningful discussion with George Soros, Founder and Chairman of the Open Society. Mr. Soros philanthropic initiative allowed thousands of children in New York City to start the new school year with brand new clothing and supplies.

In a once in a lifetime collaboration with Governor David Paterson and the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, George Soros generously donated $35 million dollars to familiies in New York City that are receiving either food stamps or Public Assistance. This donation was matched with $140 million in Federal Stimulus money from the State of New York. Each family was given a one time grant of $200 per child.

Mr. Soros felt an obligation to help those in need. ” I was once the recipient of a no strings attached lump sum of money, ” Mr. Soros recalled.

Mr. Soros’ efforts did not go unchallenged. Many critics viewed the grant as a “welfare giveaway” and suggested that the funds should have been spent on other programs.

George Soros frequently supports after school programs in addition to his ongoing efforts to bring awareness to a number of issues including public health, education and social justice.
