SOMWA held its first children holiday festival in Harlem.

The SOMWA Foundation (Survivors Of Mothers With Aids) held their 1st annual children holiday toy drive in Harlem at the Harlem Children Zone Promise Academy. This event was spectacular; children at the event received a tremendous dose of love, activities and great food.

Shacazia Brown CEO of the SOMWA Foundation put this special and truly needed event together with family, friends and volunteers. Many of the volunteers shared their own personal story on the severity of AIDS affecting their families. Shacazia and her siblings lost their mother to AIDS and formed the SOMWA Foundation in her memory.

HTR’s correspondent Lydgia Pass had the opportunity to interview Shacazia Brown

HTR – Shacazia talk about SOMWA and how everything got started?

Shacazia Brown – “It started nine (9) months ago. I started a foundation mainly for kids who lost their mothers to AIDS. So what we did was focus on letting mothers know that the community was supporting their kids. We have big parties and let them come together and have fun, and kind of just give them a breath of fresh air were they don’t have to think about their sickness.” (Check out the interview below to hear the rest)

The SOMWA holiday toy drive event placed a different face on the affects of AIDS. Children of parents burden with this malignant disease were the recipients of donated toys, arts and crafts, face painting, free haircuts and a room filled with caring people.

The message received from this event is the power of community love. When good people step up and volunteer a little of their time greatness can be achieved. Don’t take my word for it checkout the interviews and video footage on this empowering event as the HarlemTalkRadio team with correspondents Lydgia Pass and Nizer Saunders was there to capture and broadcast this special moment.
