Quinlan Care Talk …February 8, 2010 Broadcast
Bob Quinlan

Quinlan Care Talk show focused on tax filing and preparation. To share tax tips and information we invited the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs to educate and inform the community on Harlem radio.

Dianne Besunder, IRS Media Relations Representative took time to share tips on tax filing and Earned Income Credit (EIC). We covered when is the deadline to file your 2009 taxes (Apr 15, 2010) and how to file (either paper or electronically). Over 65% of tax papers are filing electronically today….less errors and faster returns (10 days).

We also talked about Earned Income Credits for lower income taxpayers. Finally, we talked about what happens if someone cannot pay their taxes by April 15th (file a extension but the estimated taxes must be paid by Apr 15th). Dianne Besunder stated even if you can’t pay the full amount the IRS will accept partial payment. However, you must follow procedures.

Fran Freedman, deputy commissioner of NYC Department of Consumer Affairs. Fran talked about where NYC residents can get help to file their taxes. She also talked about the earned income credit that too many NYC residents are not claiming.

Fran freedman informed the Harlem Talk Radio listening audience on the City’s tax help services for filing tax returns, it may not be necessary to apply for Refund Anticipation Loan services which charge high interest rates. Finally, she addressed the tax services and financial advice services that are available for lower income NYC self employed individuals.
